Department of Industrial Works seizes hazardous waste after raiding old warehouse in the heart of the economic district of Phachi District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province
On February 27, 2023 , Mr. Chulaphong Thawisri, Director-General of the Department of Industrial Works, assigned officers from the Industrial Waste Management Division and the Factory Pollution Research and Warning Division, along with Mr. Thira Kaewpimol, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provincial Industry Officer, together with Ms. Apisara Ket-in, Phachi District Chief, officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, officials from the Pollution Control Department, Phachi District Public Health, and Phachi Police Officers to inspect a suspicious old warehouse building after receiving a tip-off from local residents and officials that several types of hazardous chemicals were being illegally stored, located not far from Phachi Hospital on Ban Phachi-Hin Kong Road, Phachi District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province.
From the inspection of the area, it was found that the area was an old warehouse without a license, consisting of 5 buildings. Inside the building, there was a Lugger Truck or steel container used to transport industrial waste. There were liquids that are considered hazardous substances in 200-liter drums, 1,000-liter drums, and plastic gallons, as well as a large amount of contaminated debris with a strong chemical smell. Initial assumptions from the traces found are that it is related to a factory that has a license to separate or bury waste or unused materials.
The Department of Industrial Works (DIW) collected samples of industrial waste for laboratory testing and analysis, and seized hazardous waste to hand over to police officers to collect evidence. The area was cordoned off to prevent unrelated persons from entering the warehouse. The Department of Industrial Works, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provincial Industry Office, and local administrative organizations have filed a complaint with Phachi Police Station under the Factory Act of 1992, the Hazardous Substances Act of 1992, and other relevant laws to prevent the problem from spreading to other areas.
